"The discipline of writing something down is the first step toward making it happen." -Lee Iococca
Why do I want to be a minimalist?
I want to have more money for more important expenditures, like:- Paying off my house
- Finishing my landscaping so my kids can play outside more
- A reliable car
- Kids' educational savings plan
- My own retirement account and better contributions to retirement accounts
I don't want my house to get messy so frequently and easily.
I don't want to feel like I have to navigate through my things in order to live my life.
I want that feeling of looking around my house and loving everything I see. I want my house to breathe.
I don't want to see things I bought and realize how little I used or loved something I spent money on.
"Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful." -William Morris
Why have fewer possessions?
- Less to care for
- Less to get lost
- Less to feel guilty over (from not using or appreciating)
- Greater appreciation for the things you have and love
- Less to navigate/search through
- Less to be in the way
- Streamline your life
Why buy less?
- Save your bank account
- More money to spend on things that bring you true happiness
- More money for retirement, emergencies, and peace of mind
It isn't a good deal if you don't need it.
Goals:
Stop bringing stuff into my house that I don't actually want or won't use:- Stop accepting needless gifts "just to be nice"
- Say "No, thank you."
- Don't let other people make all the decisions about what my kids wear and play with
- Don't take things just because they are free
- Don't shop just to shop
Use my money on things that matter:
- Follow the budget - put limits on things and stick to them
- Really love something before I buy it
Spending freeze ideas:
- No fancy dinners
- No soda/ice cream/chips/candy/treats
- Eating out once a week for less than $10 for the whole family
- No clothes shopping
- No entertainment purchases (movies, music, games, etc.)
- No trips
- Try to use what you have (with food storage, body and household products, etc.)
